Fewer thorns than other Hawthorns, Winter King was introduced in 1955. Its beautiful, distinctive, and silver-gray bark is smooth when young but exfoliates with age. Glossy green foliage is attractive throughout the season but is of little interest in fall. It fruits profusely at a young age. The 3/8" orange-red fruits are showy and persist into winter. This tree is typically grown as an oversize shrub, excellent for a low branched accent or great for screening. You can maintain it smaller or pruned from the ground up to create a micro-climate for a shade garden.
